Left King Tor with 2000'@T/O into blue skies - got more
lift over plantations to 3000'@T/O, maintained for a

some bits of lift which didn't develope so glided on to
land by B3357 a mile on from North Hessary Tor.

Flight Report:
Left Beardown at 1.15pm with Malcolm - similar
conditions to last two flights from King Tor - blue sky
and inversion at approx 4500'@S/L which we reached after
a long slow climb. Unfortunately Malc had a long-time
ambition to land by his house so I lost his company when
we reached Tavy. The air was very buoyant over the town
and I boated around there for 20 min taking pics. While
I was doing this clouds started forming above as the
inversion broke up and my next climb to base (first time
this year) took me to 6500'@S/L, a record for me. That
was over Gunnislake, but the sky was mostly blue beyond
as the sea-breeze came in from the south, so then it was
just a long glide to just past Kelly Bray near
Callington.

Took off from Beer Head about !.30pm in buoyant air with
some orographic cloud but easy to fly out of. Flew west
to Sidmouth and crossed comfortably to the cliffs
beyond. Followed Paul Hook around the next point into
Ladram Bay but had to scuttle back after half a Km
(SX100857 - furthest point west) and top up height over
Tortoiseshell rocks before crossing back over Sidmouth,
just making it to the low cliffs the other side. Topped
up height on Salcombe Hill Cliff, then back across
Branscombe to the end of Beer Head (SX228878 - furthest
point east) and a landing at T/O about 3pm. Furthest two
points apart - 13.0 Km, highest height gain 585ft@T/O.

Flight Report:
Set off from Sourton Tors about 1.30pm with Martin Foley
and Malcolm (Patterson - I think) from North Devon.
There was quite a bit of lift around but it came in
small packets and wouldn't take us to cloudbase so it
took the combined thermal-seeking efforts of all three
of us to get across the moor to Postbrdge and avoid a
long walk out. There I reached base at 2600@T/O but soon
after was thrown a dummy thermal by a circling buzzard
near Dartmeet who then shot off leaving me in heavy sink
and landing soon after at Yartor Down. Martin went on to
Buckfast and Malcolm to Totnes.

Flight Report:
Salient points of the flight were:-
A stonking
thermal to get away from Sourton, hoisting me to base
(at 3000' @ T/O) in 10 mins and was 10 up at times.
Another good
climb when getting low in the middle of the moor coming
up to Cranmere Pool and Hangingstone Hill.
Making the
mistake of cross-winding to the north at the Warren
House Inn because there was a blue hole (unusually) over
the plantations and the cloud over King Tor looked
closer.
After walking to
the Moretonhampstead road, the first car I thumbed
stopped - a charming couple in a tiny Honda (I think)
Micro who somehow managed to shoehorn me and paraglider
into their car and take me to Tavistock Bus Station.
Having a couple
of debriefing beers in the Fox and Hounds with the usual
suspects and also the hanggliding turncoats who'd been
out on the moor learning to thermal their floppies and
having some success, I gathered.

Report:
Arrived at Cox Tor about oneish to find quite a bit of
cloud and a lightish westerly. Alan, Dougie and Matt
were just about staying up. I had a short flight but
couldn't find anything happening and landed at the
bottom. About twoish, with the sky clearing to the
south, the sun started coming through and Mat and Dougie
were getting quite high eventually vanishing over the
back. The wind was also picking up. I moonwalked the
Aspen up to launch and found it quite difficult to
control which suggested strong thermals coming through.
In the air, the thermals were coming through but
difficult to stay in - one turn and you were almost over
the back - and then, in the strengthening wind, you had
to use the speed bar to get back forward. I chickened
out of going with first two of these and then the third
seemed a steady five up so I went with it. Luckily the
thermal was a good'un and I managed to stay in it to
cloud-base at about 2500' @ T/O. The clouds around were
quite tall, so I moved to the sunny side and found I
could gain another few hundred feet thermalling up the
side of the cloud. After that, I followed the road (for
ease of retrieve) and with a few little top-ups managed
to stay over two grand @ T/O till I got to Poundsgate at
the edge of the moor. Here the clouds had thinned out
and the lift as well (the waterfall effect coming off
the moor?) and I aimed for the large quarry just north
of Ashburton and a bonfire next to it.
These didn't work
so crossing the A38 at the Newton Abbot turn-off I was
getting quite low and looking at some pretty uninviting
landing options - little hillocks, tight fields, power
lines - you name 'em. Luckily I picked up some weak lift
that took me another 5 or 6 km over the china clay works
to land a mile north of Newton Abbot.
